Rant: a stuck focus ring on a 50mm took me 4 hours when the fix was 10 minutes
I spent a whole Saturday afternoon last month fighting a gritty focus ring on an old Nikkor 50mm f/1.8, soaked it in lighter fluid twice and still couldn't get it to turn smooth. Turns out the real problem was a tiny dent in the filter thread that was pinching the whole front barrel, and a couple minutes with a lens vise and a dowel sorted it right out. How do you all check for barrel deformation before you start tearing into the helicoid?
Ever try just rolling the barrel on a flat counter before reaching for the tools? Learned that one the hard way too, a bent filter ring shows up as a wobble real quick, way faster than dunking it in fluid and hoping. Funny how often the "stuck helicoid" turns out to be a bent front end pinching things, and lighter fluid just makes a mess you gotta clean up later. Take it with a grain of salt but a cheap set of calipers and a flat surface catch most of these before you even pull the ring off.
