Showerthought: a client called their old SLR a 'dumb camera' and it got me thinking

They meant it had no autofocus, but the way they said it felt like calling a hand tool 'dumb' because it doesn't do the work for you. I spent 45 minutes cleaning the mirror box on that 'dumb' Nikon FM2 and it's still more reliable than most new stuff. Anyone else get that vibe when folks dismiss the older mechanical gear?

Feel the same way about my old manual typewriter. People call it a useless brick, but it never needs a software update to just... work. Guess that makes me a dumb typist.

Right? It's like the more updates something gets, the more chances there are for it to just... stop. My grandpa's old radio still plays, no login required.

The "dumb typist" thing made me laugh because it's so true. I feel like there's this weird respect you build with a tool that doesn't hold your hand, you know? Like the FM2 forces you to actually learn light and focus instead of just trusting a computer to guess for you.
