A random commenter told me my tent stakes were way too small for sandy soil

After three nights of waking up with my fly half off the ground at Cape Hatteras last month, I swapped to 8-inch MSR Groundhogs and didn't move an inch in the next storm, has anyone else found that stake length matters way more than brand?

Read that bigger stakes make a huge difference in loose sand, totally agree.

Tbh @torres.blair, bigger stakes definitely help in loose sand, but I'd push back a little on the "huge" difference part. The real game changer is actually how deep you can get them, not just the size. A skinny stake buried 10 inches deep holds way better than a fat one barely in the ground. People focus too much on the width and forget the length matters just as much. Wind loads can yank big stakes right out if they're not seated properly. Pair a longer stake with a good angle, and you're golden even in the soft stuff.

@torres.blair 8 inch depth beats 2 inch width every time, just saying.
