Got 12 miles into the trail before realizing my $80 tent was missing the rainfly
Had to rig up a tarp with paracord and rocks for two nights during a surprise storm, and now I'm wondering if I should just drop the cash on a better tent or try to patch things with the customer service team has anyone else had a company actually send a missing part without a receipt?

Is customer service even gonna believe you when you tell them your tent came without the rainfly but you don't have a receipt? They'll probably think you're trying to scam them for a free part (which, to be fair, some people totally do). I'd say just bite the bullet and get a decent tent now, because trying to argue with a company about a missing part for an $80 tent is like trying to argue with a rock - it's not gonna move. But hey, at least you got a good story out of it and a new skill for rigging tarps in the rain, so that's something, right?

Yeah, you're not wrong about customer service being skeptical. But I had a similar thing happen with an air mattress that had a hole straight out of the box, no receipt. I just called the company, explained I got it as a gift and didn't have the receipt but had the packaging. They asked for the batch code on the box and the UPC label. I sent a photo of the whole mess, the deflated mattress, the box with the code, and they mailed me a replacement in like a week. No hassle at all. So maybe it depends on the brand, but it's worth a shot if the tent has a serial number or something. Just be real polite and don't sound like you're trying to pull a fast one, you know? Worst they can say is no.
