Lost a tent stake in the dark at Joshua Tree last month. Found a system that works now.
Was setting up camp late at Joshua Tree. Dropped one of those cheap aluminum stakes. Gone forever in the sand. Next morning I bought a set of orange MSR Groundhogs. Bright color. Hard to lose. Plus they hold way better in loose dirt. Anyone else switch to colored stakes after losing gear in the dark?

Didn't Groundhog stakes actually start as bright orange?

Totally feel you on this, @elliot_roberts. I used to think the same thing until someone pointed out they've always been white, but the orange ones were probably just a knockoff or something. It's confusing though, I get why you'd ask.

Right, because nothing says "mystical rodent prediction" quite like high-visibility safety orange. Groundhogs are natural born OSHA inspectors, clearly.
Next thing you'll tell me is Punxsutawney Phil originally wore a little hard hat and reflective vest.
Either way, I'm pretty sure they've been white since before we could even afford to paint them anything else.
