Thinking back on my first camp stove and the boiling water hack I still use

That old stove was so slow and finicky... you had to baby it just to get a flame going. I learned to put the water on to boil right away when I got to camp, even before the tent was up. It meant hot cocoa or coffee was ready fast, saving a lot of waiting time later. With modern stoves, it's quicker, but I still do this out of habit. It really helps get the camp vibe started without any fuss.

Yeah, then I'll get the food kit sorted while it heats up.

What model was that old stove, the kind where you'd almost give up and eat cold beans? I still do the water thing too, but now I'll start it then unpack my chair and sleeping bag. By the time I'm done fiddling with the tent poles, the kettle's whistling. It beats just staring at a pot, waiting.

Man, that takes me back. I had a rusty old Coleman something-or-other that fought you every single time. The trick was definitely to find something else to do, otherwise the wait would drive you nuts. Your method with the tent poles is way smarter than my old strategy of just sighing heavily at it. It's funny how we all learned the same lesson to just walk away and let it do its thing.
