Took a chance on a cheap 20-degree bag from Amazon and it actually worked

I got a Teton Sports Tracker for a quick trip to the White Mountains last fall, expecting to freeze. The nights got down to 25 and I was perfectly warm, which totally went against my 'you get what you pay for' gear rule. Now I'm wondering if some budget stuff is secretly good, or if I just got lucky with the weather. Has anyone else had a cheap piece of gear completely surprise them?

Totally get that shock when cheap gear works.

Test it in your backyard on a cold night to see its real limit.

Expanding on what simonk98 said, I think the shock comes from realizing that sometimes the brand tax is real, but so is the risk of getting a dud. For every one cheap bag that works, there's probably five that are basically just a garbage bag with fleece glued to it. But when you hit that sweet spot, it feels like you cracked some kind of outdoor gear code, you know? I'd still be careful about trusting it in actual winter conditions without a solid backup plan, but for shoulder season stuff it's hard to argue with the price.

What's the coldest you've pushed that bag since then?
