Why our local campers are drowning in unused high-end gear...
I live near a big park where people camp often. Last month, I helped with a cleanup and found brand new gear left behind... like those fancy stoves. It's crazy how much money gets spent on stuff that never sees the woods. My old stove cost me twenty bucks and I've used it for years. People get sucked into ads and reviews for the latest thing, but real camping doesn't need all that. If you're buying gear, think about if you'll actually pack it up and go. Otherwise, you're just collecting expensive dust magnets.

Seeing all that abandoned gear just proves how wasteful people can be. My method is to test gear in real conditions before spending money. Borrowed a top-shelf sleeping bag once and froze my butt off compared to my reliable old one. That experience taught me that new doesn't always mean better. Now I buy only what I know I'll use repeatedly from actual need. Fancy marketing doesn't sway me after that.

Man, you hit the nail on the head! Testing gear before you buy is so key to avoiding waste. I've seen friends blow cash on fancy tents only to find out they hate setting them up. My old backpack has been through hell and still works better than any new one I've tried. It's crazy how marketing makes us think we need the latest stuff every year. What's the worst piece of gear you ever bought based on hype?

But your one test could've been a fluke!
