Chose a 9-to-5 school office job over a part-time coding gig 2 years ago, and now I wonder if I missed out on bigger opportunities

I picked the steady paycheck and summers off for security, but the freelance tech work would have paid triple and let me work remote, has anyone else regretted playing it safe like that?

My cousin took a similar coding gig around the same time and he's been laid off twice already. The money was good but he spent six months between jobs both times. You've had two years of steady paychecks and benefits, which is nothing to shrug at. The school schedule also means you've got real weekends and holidays that tech contractors often don't get.

Wait wait wait, hold up. Two layoffs in that short of a time? That's rough, I didn't realize how unstable those tech contractor gigs could be. Sounds like your cousin got hit with the "we're restructuring" speech twice, which is just brutal. Makes the steady school schedule actually sound like a smart move, even if the pay isn't as flashy.

Two years later and you're still alive with a regular paycheck? Sounds like you won, honestly. Grass is always greener until you're debugging someone's broken code at 11pm for triple the stress.
