I thought the 'informational interview' thing was just busywork for college kids

My old boss in Denver told me to do them when I was stuck, but I never did. Then last week I was thinking about moving from marketing to project management and finally called a guy I met at a conference. We talked for 20 minutes and he gave me the names of two online courses that actually teach the software his team uses. He also said his company is hiring in about 3 months. I wasted a whole year just looking at job posts online. Has anyone else gotten a real lead from just asking someone for advice?

Ever think those were a waste of time? I did. But I got my current job because I asked a friend of a friend for coffee. Just to talk. Changed my whole view.

That's how I found my apartment, actually.

Yeah that part about wasting a year just looking at job posts online hits hard. I see this everywhere, not just with jobs. People will read reviews for weeks instead of just asking one friend who owns the thing. We get stuck in our own heads looking at info online, when a real conversation cuts through all the noise in minutes. It's like we forget that asking a simple question is still the fastest way to get a real answer.
