My manager told me to never ask for a raise during budget planning season

I waited until October like she said, and the company had already allocated all funds. She was right, I should have pushed in July. Has anyone else missed a window because of bad timing advice?

That "perfect timing" talk tessap73 mentioned is everywhere. Like waiting for the exact right moment to call a friend you lost touch with, and then years go by. Or not fixing that leaky faucet because you're waiting for a free weekend, and then your water bill is huge. It makes you miss the actual window, which is usually just "now.

Ugh, that's the worst kind of advice because it sounds so reasonable when you get it. I once waited for a "good time to ask" that my coworker swore by, and by the time I did, the person who could approve it was on a six-week vacation. Felt like a total genius. What's the most frustrating part for you, just the missed chance or the fact the advice came from your boss?

Yeah the "good time to ask" thing is such a trap. I just started asking right away.

My old manager at the print shop always said to wait for a quiet Tuesday. I needed a new color cartridge for a rush job last month, so I just walked into the supply closet and took one. Got the job done two days early. Sometimes you just have to ignore the "perfect timing" talk and do the thing.
