Paid $500 for a 'career coach' and it was the worst choice I ever made
Everyone online says you need a coach to get ahead, so I saved up and hired one last year. We did six sessions at about $500 total. It was all generic advice I could find for free, like 'update your resume' and 'network more'. The worst part was when I told her I felt stuck in my admin job, she just said to 'be more positive' and sent me a link to a motivational video. I needed real steps, not happy talk. That money could have paid for a real certification class. Now I tell people to be very careful before spending on a service like that. Has anyone found a good way to check if a career coach is actually helpful before you pay them?

Totally get it, I see this all the time now with every kind of "expert" online. People sell expensive plans for fitness, side hustles, or dating that are just repackaged common sense. It's like they're selling the idea of a fix instead of actual useful steps. Makes you really question who you can trust for real help.
