Showerthought: That one boss who laughed at my resume gap actually helped me out

I was interviewing at a small accounting firm in Portland about 2 years ago and the manager laughed when I tried to explain a 6 month gap in my resume. He told me, "Just say you were taking care of family, nobody cares about the gap itself." It stuck with me because he was right... I was overcomplicating it all. Has anyone else had a hiring manager give weird advice that actually worked?

Read a study saying 85% of managers don't mind resume gaps if you just explain it simply.

Yeah exactly, "explain it simply" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there. Like if you say you took time off to care for a sick parent that's one thing, but if you say you were "finding yourself" or traveling they're gonna side-eye you hard no matter what any study says.

Yeah that study probably missed the part where they still side-eye you if the gap was for something "weird" like traveling.
