TIL to ask about the on-call rotation in the interview after a Friday night at a Nashville office
Two years ago I took a job at a small software company in Nashville and during the interview I never asked how their on-call schedule worked. Fast forward to my fourth week, my phone rang at 11:40 on a Friday night and I spent the next 3 hours fixing a server issue alone with no backup. The job listing said "flexible hours" and I figured that just meant I could start around 9 or 10. Turns out flexible meant I was basically on call every other weekend for the same $52,000 salary. I lasted 7 months there and it soured me on small companies for a while. Now I ask about the rotation, who else is on the call tree, and how often it actually rings. Does anyone have a good way to bring this up without sounding like you're already worried before you even get hired?
