Tried the 'quiet quitting' approach for 3 months and it backfired hard

I work in accounting downtown and last spring I decided to just do my 40 hours and nothing extra. No staying late, no projects outside my job description. Figured I'd protect my sanity. But my annual review came last week and my manager said I was 'coasting' and put me on a performance plan. I learned that in my field, visibility matters more than I thought. Has anyone else tried scaling back and got blindsided by the reaction?

Ask if they ever saw anyone else get burned by quiet quitting before trying it.

Is it really quiet quitting or just people finally waking up to how these places treat you like a number? You see the same thing in retail and food service where folks stop going the extra mile and suddenly management acts all surprised. Feels like the system is built to burn people out and then blame them for not caring anymore.
