Got called out for my miter cuts on a window job last month

An older guy on the crew pulled me aside and said, 'Kid, you're measuring from the fence, not the blade. That's why your reveals are off.' I'd been doing it that way for years... never even thought about it. Switched to marking from the blade itself and my fit improved overnight. Anyone else have a simple tip that fixed a long standing bad habit?

That's a perfect example of how we often learn the "how" before the "why". You follow a method that seems to work, so you never question the basics. It takes someone with more experience to spot the foundational flaw.

Honestly, that's how you actually learn a craft. You mess up the basics yourself, figure out why it failed, and then you never forget it. Getting it perfect from a teacher just makes you lazy.
