I quit coping miters by eye 6 years ago and my trim work has never been cleaner
For my first 8 years in the trade I cut every inside corner by eye and chased the gap with caulk, and I told myself it was fine because the painter always came behind me anyway. Then a guy I worked with on a big trim job in Columbus watched me gap a crown corner and just shook his head, walked over, and took a pencil off my ear to show me how he bisects the angle with a bevel square before he ever touches the saw. I felt like a fool for about a minute, then I realized he was saving me 20 minutes a corner on a 14 room house. Now I use a cheap angle finder and a coping saw on every inside corner, and my outside miters get glued and pinned before they ever go up. The first time I coped a full room of base by hand it took me twice as long, but the joints looked like one piece of wood and I have not gone back since. My foreman told me last month my trim passes inspection without a single callback, which never happened in the caulk days. Any of you still cutting corners by eye or did you all switch over years ago like I should have?
