Took me 3 hours to fix a wrinkling seam that should have been 20 minutes

I was putting down a plush carpet in a bedroom in Phoenix and the seam kept puckering no matter what I did. Turned out the power stretcher head was loose by just a hair and I didn't catch it until I checked every other tool. Has anyone else had a tiny tool issue eat up a whole afternoon like that?

Did you check the carpet backing direction before you even stretched it?

Learned that lesson the hard way after I laid a whole room backwards and had to pull it all up again.

I get what you're saying but honestly I think people blame their tools way too much when really it's just rushing through setup. I've seen guys spend an hour hunting for a phantom issue with their stretcher when really the carpet just wasn't relaxed enough in the heat. @grantw41 probably knows what I mean since he's been at this longer than most. A loose head is annoying sure, but three hours tells me you were probably trying to force things instead of stepping back and thinking it through. Carpet work is all about patience and if you assume every hiccup is a tool problem you'll drive yourself crazy. Sometimes the easy fix is just taking a break and coming back with fresh eyes instead of tearing everything apart.
