Update: I thought those new 'zero-VOC' seam sealers were just marketing, but a job in Portland last month proved me wrong.

Seriously, the big deal is your lungs feel like garbage after a day with the old high-VOC products. I used to get pounding headaches by lunchtime. Switched to a zero-VOC sealer for a big interior job last fall and it was a total game changer. No chemical smell hanging in the air, no dizzy feeling, and I could actually think straight. It's not about the stuff not working, it's about not poisoning yourself while you work.

My uncle did roofing in Tucson for thirty years. He had this bad cough for the last decade he worked, and his doctor straight up told him it was from the fumes. He switched to low VOC stuff around 2010 and said the difference in how he felt at the end of the day was huge. It's not just about the smell, it's about breathing that stuff in for eight hours straight, five days a week. The old products got the job done, but sometimes the cost is more than just the price on the can.
