Went back to my old knee kicker on a 40 yard stretch last month and it beat the power stretcher hands down
I had a 40 yard job in a rental down in Mesa last month and the power stretcher kept slipping off the tackless on a doorway seam, so out of frustration I switched to my old knee kicker for the last 12 feet. My knees screamed all night, but that seam laid flat with zero wrinkles and the power stretcher left a little ridge at the wall on the first try. I think the kicker gives me better feel for how much tension is actually going into the backing instead of just cranking it and hoping. Any of you keep a kicker in the truck for tight doorways and trouble seams, or am I just old school and stubborn?
That doorway seam fight sounds so familiar. Had a 3 step stretch into a hallway in a house up in Phoenix and the power stretcher kept popping off the tackless every time I got near the wall, so I grabbed my old kicker and finished the last 10 feet by hand. Same thing you noticed, you can feel the backing load up and know right when it's tight instead of guessing. My knees hate me the next day but the seam came out dead flat and no ridge at the wall. I keep the kicker on the truck for exactly that kind of trouble spot now. You're not just being stubborn, that feel is real.
