Remember when we all thought that one actor's apology was just for the cameras?
I was sure that whole 'I'm taking time to reflect' video from a few years back was just PR spin (you know, the one where he was sitting in front of a plain bookshelf). I figured he'd be back to his old stuff in a month. But then he actually vanished for like, a full year, and came back with that indie film that was totally different from his usual work. He didn't even promote it much, which felt real. It made me go back and watch the apology again, and the lack of a big production (no sad music, no crying) actually sold it. I guess sometimes the quiet ones mean it. Has anyone else had an apology they totally misjudged at first?

That actor's comeback film felt like more of the same old PR to me.

Actually saw that comeback film last week and have to disagree, @lucast81. It felt like a real shift for them, like they were trying something new with a smaller role. The whole vibe was less polished and more raw than their usual stuff. Maybe the PR push made it seem like more of the same, but the performance itself was different this time. It just landed for me in a way their past few movies haven't.

Wait, you actually thought it felt raw? I saw that same movie and it looked like every other role they've done lately... @adamt84 must have watched a different cut or something. Just can't see what you're seeing at all.

honestly I've been burned before thinking a movie was gonna be different just cuz the marketing said so. if you go in expecting nothing and just watch the performance itself without the hype, sometimes it hits different. i usually wait till the second week and see what people who aren't the superfans are saying, that's when you get the real takes. adam might be onto something if he caught it at a small screening or something, that's totally changed how i see stuff before. but yeah, if you only saw the big release version, i get why it looked the same.
