Yeah that whole "I'm sorry if you were offended" thing really gets me. It's like when people at work say "I'm sorry you feel that way" instead of owning what they actually did wrong, it changes everything about how genuine it feels.

I get where you're coming from but I actually don't mind the "sorry you feel that way" stuff sometimes. I think it can be a genuine attempt to validate someone's feelings even when you don't agree with their version of events. Doesn't it depend on the situation and how the person says it?

The vague apology is always a dead giveaway. If they can't even SAY what they did, they're just trying to make the whole thing go away without taking real responsibility. It's like they're hoping the words sound nice enough that nobody will notice the actual admission is missing.
