Hit 500 celebrity sightings debunked in 6 months

Everyone talks about how wild celebrity gossip is online, but I've been tracking and fact-checking those 'fan spotted' stories for half a year now and 500 of them turned out to be staged or fake. Like, who's actually believing the stuff from those anonymous accounts?

People will believe anything they see on their phone these days.

Haven't people always believed what they saw on screens though? Like back in the 90s we had tabloid papers and TV infomercials. It's not really a phone thing. People just trust viral posts more than they should sometimes, but that's not unique to smartphones.

Fair point, but I think there's a difference between seeing something in a tabloid or an infomercial and seeing it on your phone. Tabloids and TV infomercials at least had some level of editorial oversight or a clear commercial motive you could spot. Viral posts on phones come from friends, family, and random accounts that feel more personal and trustworthy by default. Plus phones show you things from people you actually know, not just some stranger trying to sell you a magnetic bracelet. It's easier to question a paid ad than a video your cousin shared from an account that looks like news. So yeah, people have always believed stuff on screens, but the delivery system now is way more convincing.
