PSA: I tried to fact check a viral story about that singer's 'secret wedding' and it totally blew up in my face

Last Thursday, I saw this huge thread on another site saying a famous pop star had a private ceremony in Italy. It had all these details, like a specific hotel in Lake Como and a guest list with other celebs. I spent like two hours digging, cross checking flight records people posted and looking at tagged photos from that week. I was so sure I had proof it was fake. Then, her own publicist confirmed the wedding happened, just at a different spot with way fewer people. My whole 'breakdown' was based on wrong info that everyone else was running with too. It was a real wake up call about how gossip can build on itself until it feels true. Has anyone else had a deep dive completely fall apart because the starting point was just made up?

The Greeks kept written lists of winners, not flight logs. They didn't have planes back then. It's just a different kind of record keeping.

Wait, they had flight records? That's wild.

The ancient Greeks tracked Olympic winners for centuries. That's basically the same idea as keeping flight logs. People have always recorded things that seemed important to them.

Drop the comparison and just keep your own records how you want. If you're logging flights for your own purposes, that's all that really matters in the end.
