Just saw a line cook in Austin use a bench scraper for way more than dough

I mean, they were using it to scoop veggie scraps, portion out slaw, even to transfer a whole sheet of cookies at once. I'd never thought of it as a main tool before, but now I keep one in my pocket during prep. Anyone else have a simple tool they use for a bunch of different jobs?

Wait wait wait. @colescott used their bench scraper to open a paint can? I mean I get being resourceful but that feels like asking for a broken blade or a mangled handle. These things aren't indestructible and paint lids can be stubborn. I'd rather grab a flathead screwdriver than risk ruining a tool I actually depend on for kitchen work. Bench scrapers are great but they're not pry bars you know?

Is it really that big of a deal? A bench scraper is just a piece of metal with a handle. I get that it's handy, but calling it a main tool seems like a stretch. It's good for scraping a board clean, sure. I guess I just don't see the need to make a simple thing sound so important.

Exactly, it's a piece of metal. I used mine to open a paint can last week. They're fine, but the_viola is right that you have to try it to get the hype. Mine mostly just moves chopped onions from the board to the pan. Calling it a main tool is a bit much, like saying a butter knife is a main tool because you can spread stuff with it.

Try using one for a week and you'll see... it's like a third hand in the kitchen.
