A Cook County clerk looked at my small claims forms and just said 'redo these, hon'
Filed my first small claims case at the Daley Center back in 2019. $1,400 owed on a bounced check from a commercial client. Thought I did it right because I copied the forms off the circuit court website. Clerk slid them back across the counter and said the defendant name has to match the Secretary of State registry exactly, not the name on the invoice. Cost me a $60 refiling fee and a two week delay. Now I pull the corp file before I ever fill out a complaint. Anybody got a shortcut for checking LLC names without paying the state's $5 search fee every time?
The corp name matching thing is real but the SOS site is actually free for the name search part. The $5 fee only kicks in if you want the certified copy or the full filing history. Just pull up the name search on the Illinois Secretary of State site before you file, takes two minutes and costs nothing. Saved me from the same headache a few years back.
