Had to choose between a lawyer and a handshake deal for a fence dispute last week
My neighbor in Logan Square put up a new fence 2 feet onto my property line while I was on vacation. When I got back I had to pick between hiring a real estate lawyer for $350 an hour or just talking it out over beers. I went with the lawyer because my neighbor is a total hardhead and I knew a handshake would go nowhere. The lawyer sent a certified letter and the neighbor folded immediately after seeing the survey from 2019. Cost me $700 total but saved me from a fence that would have shrunk my tiny yard by 20%. Has anyone else dealt with a property line fight where a simple chat just wasnt gonna cut it?

Yeah, "talking it out over beers" rarely cuts it when money and property lines are on the line. It's like people only respect something when it has a lawyer's name on it these days.

Oh man, "only respect something when it has a lawyer's name on it" is way too true. I had this whole thing with a neighbor over a shared fence line. We talked about it a few times, shook hands, thought it was settled. Then he changed his mind a month later and acted like we never even had a conversation. Ended up having to get a written agreement notarized just to keep the peace. It's exhausting that a handshake doesn't mean anything anymore, isn't it?
