I finally switched from handling my own small claims case to paying a lawyer $300, and the difference was night and day
I got served over a $1,200 security deposit dispute with my old landlord in Logan Square and figured I could just show up to the Daley Center and argue it myself. After watching a guy in front of me get his case tossed for not filing a Cook County appearance form right, I hired a lawyer for $300 and she got the whole thing settled in one continuance. Has anyone here actually won a pro se case at the Daley Center, or is that just something people say online?
The difference was night and day" is putting it mildly. I watched a woman at the Daley Center try to collect on a $900 unpaid invoice and the judge kept asking if she had served the defendant properly under Illinois Supreme Court Rule 102, and she had no idea what he was talking about. She ended up getting a continuance just to go read the rules. My cousin went through the same thing over a broken lease in Rogers Park and burned three vacation days on it before he gave up and hired someone.
