I thought my landlord's 'no pets' clause was just a suggestion, but a $500 fine last month proved me wrong

Did you think the fine print was just there for decoration? That's a tough way to learn that landlords tend to mean what's in the contract. I've seen a few friends try to sneak a pet in, and it almost never ends well. It's a bummer, but that clause is usually the one thing they won't bend on. Hopefully your furry friend was at least worth the price.

Pet deposits are just damage insurance.

Actually a lot of landlords will bend on that pet clause if you just ask and offer a pet deposit. Calling it the "one thing they won't bend on" is a stretch. I got my last place to allow a cat by paying an extra fifty a month. They just want to cover potential damage.
