My landlord said a verbal agreement was as good as written in Chicago

Last July my landlord told me rent would stay at $1200 for another year, just a handshake and a nod. Now she's trying to hike it to $1450 with 30 days notice and says the verbal thing means nothing. Is there any way to fight this in Cook County or am I just screwed?

Yeah @the_holly is spot on, that line is just a way to get you to trust them without putting anything in writing. Have you checked if you have any texts or emails from around that time that mention the $1200?

@the_holly is right, I recorded my verbal promise on my phone and it saved me in court.

That line about "verbal agreement as good as written" is exactly what I used to believe too, but after getting burned the same way I saw it's just landlords saying what gets you to sign. You're probably screwed unless you have texts or emails backing up that $1200 promise.
