My landlord tried to evict me over a broken window last week

I live in a building in Lincoln Park and the window in my bedroom just cracked on its own during that cold snap last Tuesday. The landlord said I have to pay $400 to fix it or he'll file for eviction. Is that even legal here in Chicago?

Did you actually break it or did it just crack from the cold? I had a similar thing happen when my heat went out for one night and the whole window split, my landlord tried charging me too until I showed him the city's tenant laws.

The landlord can file for eviction only if you actually broke it, but a crack from cold weather isn't your fault under Chicago's heat ordinance laws.
