My landlord tried to evict me over a parking spot, here's what saved me

Back in March my landlord in Logan Square gave me a 5 day notice over a disputed parking spot in the alley. I almost packed up and left but a buddy told me to check the Chicago RLTO first. Turns out parking spots aren't covered under the eviction rules unless they're in the lease, and mine wasn't. I filed a response with the housing court clerk on day 4 and the judge tossed it in 10 minutes. Has anyone else fought an eviction over something that wasn't even in their lease?

Wait, you mean landlords can't just make up rules about stuff that isn't even in writing? That's wild. Next thing you know they'll try to evict me for complaining about the raccoons in the dumpster. I once had a landlord try to charge me a late fee for rent that was due on a Sunday, like the bank was even open. Good thing you checked that RLTO thing, most people just fold like a cheap lawn chair when they see a scary notice. Judges actually hate sloppy eviction attempts almost as much as they hate people who don't read the law. You basically won the lottery just by typing "this isn't in my lease" into a form.

Honestly sounds like you got lucky more than anything. Half the judges in this city would've just rubber-stamped the eviction and told you to deal with it. The RLTO only helps if you actually know about it and have the time to file, most people don't.
