My landlord tried to keep my security deposit for 'normal wear and tear'
Moved out of a Logan Square apartment back in April. Landlord sent me a list of deductions - $350 for repainting, $200 for carpet cleaning. I looked up Chicago's RLTO rules. Repainting after 2 years is on them, not me. Sent a certified letter citing the ordinance with photos from move-in. Got a check for $450 back within two weeks. Anyone else have a landlord try this?

Oh yeah, the old "repainting after you leave" trick. That's a classic. My landlord in Wicker Park tried to hit me with $400 for "smoke damage" because I had a candle on the counter once. I sent them a certified letter with the Chicago RLTO section about repainting being on them after a year, and suddenly they found a "mistake" in their math. Got my full deposit back plus a little extra for the hassle. People don't realize how much power the RLTO gives you if you just actually read it and follow the steps.

Oh man, that is SO frustrating when landlords try to pull that crap. I totally feel for you, especially when you've done everything right. @max_cooper21 is spot on about the RLTO, it's basically your secret weapon if you just take the time to look it up and send that certified letter. I had a similar situation with my old place in Uptown, they tried to charge me for "repairing" a crack in the wall that was there when I moved in. I sent them photos from day one with a copy of the RLTO section, and they caved super fast too. It's wild how fast they change their tune when you actually know your rights.

@david_reed22 that letter works every time, just keep your own photos and a copy of the RLTO handy.
