My landlord's 'friendly reminder' turned into a 14 page demand letter over a balcony chair
After a gust of wind sent my plastic lawn chair into the alley last Tuesday, my building manager cited a lease line about 'personal property displacement' and threatened eviction, so I paid $35 for a half hour consult with a tenant lawyer in Logan Square who called the whole thing a bluff, but now I'm wondering if anyone else has fought back on these nitpicky violations without losing their security deposit.

Ha! Yeah I've been down this exact road. My old landlord tried the same crap over a doormat that was "too wide" for the hallway. I ended up taking photos of every single unit that had stuff out and emailed them to the property manager asking if we all needed to move or just me. That shut it down fast, but I still documented everything and kept my receipts for the lawyer consult. Word of advice, take a video walkthrough of your whole apartment right now showing the date and time, it saved my deposit when they tried claiming damage that was already there. And honestly, if they threaten eviction over a chair, they're just fishing for you to break first. Keep paying rent on time and don't give them anything real to use against you.
