My neighbor the landlord gave me a reality check about the Chicago RLTO today.

He said he just ignores the new security deposit rules because 'nobody actually enforces that stuff' - how often does that backfire on landlords here when tenants actually know their rights?

I mean I took my old landlord to small claims over that exact thing and got my full deposit back plus interest.

Wait, does he really think tenants never talk to each other? @thea602 proved you can get your money back, plus interest, without even needing a lawyer. Most landlords like him are just rolling the dice until they hit a tenant who knows how to file the paperwork.

i mean yeah but let's be real here, most people aren't gonna go through all that paperwork for a few hundred bucks. it's like yeah you CAN but are you really gonna spend your saturday morning at the courthouse over a deposit dispute lol. plus a lot of slumlords know that and count on it, that's why they pull this stuff. unless you're talking serious money i doubt most tenants even bother.
