My old landlord told me I had to pay for a full repaint when I moved out of my Logan Square place

He claimed it was standard in the lease, but a friend who works at the Chicago Tenants' Rights group said city law only allows landlords to charge for damage beyond normal wear and tear. I pointed this out and he backed down immediately, saving me over $800. Has anyone else had a landlord try this with painting costs?

Landlords always try that stuff.

Classic landlord move right there. Mine tried to bill me for repainting the whole apartment because of a single scuff mark near the door. I sent him a photo of the city housing code section and suddenly that "required full repaint" turned into a $20 touch-up fee. They're just hoping you don't know your rights.

That's insane they tried to charge for a full repaint over one scuff. Good on you for knowing the rules.
