Overheard a guy at the Dunkin' on Clark say his landlord tried to charge him for a new fridge after the old one just needed a $20 part.

Made me wonder, how many tenants in Chicago get billed for full replacements when a simple repair would do, and what's the best way to push back on that?

Unbelievable. That landlord is either clueless or just hoping the tenant won't question it. Always ask for the old broken part and a receipt for the new appliance.

Oh man, this is so true. My last landlord tried to charge me for a whole new fridge when it was just the water filter line that burst. I stood my ground and asked to see the broken unit and the invoice... turns out he was reusing an old receipt from a different job. Saved myself like $800. Never just take their word for it.

Yeah always ask for the broken part back. I made that a rule after a place tried to bill me for a full oven replacement that was just a heating element.
