Rant: my cousin's lawyer friend swore I had no case over a 2 week late rent check, ended up getting $3,400 back
So my old landlord on the south side tried to keep my whole $3,400 deposit over a rent check that showed up 2 weeks late, which he claimed was grounds to keep everything. My cousin's buddy, who passed the bar but does real estate closings up in Skokie, said flat out that late payment voids any claim and I should just eat it. Something felt off so I paid a guy $150 for a consult and he pulled up the city rules on deposit returns, turns out the late fee was $50 max and the rest had to come back inside 45 days. Landlord never sent a itemized list so the lawyer said that alone put him on the hook for double. Got the full check plus the penalty, minus the $150. Your mileage may vary depending on how sloppy your landlord is with paperwork, but has anyone else had a friend-of-a-friend give them dead wrong legal advice?
