Rant: Why did nobody tell me Illinois has a 6 year limit on old debt lawsuits?
I was fighting a collections case from 2017 and the judge just straight up dismissed it because the statute of limitations expired, something I only found out from a random paralegal in the hallway. Has anyone else almost paid off zombie debt that was already legally dead?

Actually the 6 year limit makes sense so old debts don't haunt people forever, right?

Respectfully @miasanchez I disagree - six years feels way too short for big debts (mortgages, student loans, that kind of thing).

My buddy took out a 30 year mortgage in 2008 and by the time he sold the house in 2015 he still owed more than he bought it for. That six year clock wouldn't have helped him one bit.
