Serious question, I just read that Chicago landlords can charge up to $500 for a pet deposit

I was looking at a lease for a place in Logan Square and saw that line, so I checked the city's rental rules online. It turns out there's no legal limit on pet fees in Illinois, but Chicago has its own rule capping it at that amount. Has anyone here had a landlord try to charge more than that?

Honestly I always thought they could charge whatever they wanted. My old landlord in Lakeview tried to hit me with a $750 non-refundable pet fee for my cat. I almost just paid it, but my friend told me to check the city code. Found that $500 cap rule. Sent him a link to the ordinance. He backed down real quick and changed the fee. It's crazy how many landlords just hope you don't know your rights.

Non-refundable pet fee for a cat" is wild to me. That's just a sneaky way to keep your money no matter what. Good on you for looking it up and calling him out.

Landlords bank on people not reading the fine print.
