Two eviction notices in one month, both for the same apartment
I rent a unit in Logan Square and got a 5-day notice from the landlord last Tuesday, then another one yesterday for the same alleged late rent I already paid with a receipt. Turns out my payment went to a different property management account after they switched systems in March, and now they're threatening to file with the Cook County court. Has anyone fought a double notice like this, and should I just call the Chicago tenant helpline or get a lawyer first?

Man, that's a mess and I feel for you. I had something similar happen a few years back in Uptown where my rent check went to a closed account after they switched management, and they tried to hit me with a notice too. What worked for me was getting everything in writing first, then calling the Chicago helpline before talking to a lawyer, because they walked me through exactly what to show the landlord to prove it was their screw-up. I sent the landlord a certified letter with copies of my receipt and the bank statement showing the payment left my account, and that shut them up real quick. The helpline also told me that if they file with the court, you can show the judge the same proof and it'll likely get tossed. So my advice is call the helpline today, don't ghost them, and keep every single paper trail handy. Did you get a written response from them when you showed them the receipt?
