Vent: People keep telling Chicago renters to just withhold rent when the landlord ignores repairs, and that gets folks evicted
I have watched three neighbors in my building on the northwest side do this in the last year and all three ended up in eviction court. The thing nobody mentions is that in Chicago you can't just stop paying, you have to put the money in escrow and file with the city first, and there are real deadlines. My one neighbor stopped paying $1,150 a month for four months because the heat was out, and the judge still sided with the landlord because she never filed a single form. Cook County has a free legal aid clinic that walks you through the 14 day notice and the escrow stuff, but you have to actually go. If your place is falling apart, have you tried the escrow route or did you just stop paying? I want to know if anyone here actually pulled it off.
