A customer in Cincinnati pointed out my brush technique was too aggressive on old flue liners.
They said I was leaving visible scratch marks that could speed up wear. I switched to a softer, nylon-bristle brush for anything pre-1980 and it makes a noticeable difference. Anyone else adjust their tools based on liner age?

Scratch marks on old liners seem like a minor issue to me.

Consider the original clay composition when choosing your brush stiffness.

So how do you actually figure out the original clay makeup on a vintage piece? The info isn't always marked, and testing it wrong seems risky.

Harder clays need stiff brushes, but softer ones will get wrecked by anything too firm.
