Appreciation post: stopped wire brushing after 12 years because a 68 year old sweep in Dayton showed me hand scraping
I always thought wire brushes were the only way to get creosote off a flue. Every job I did for 12 years, brush first, then scrape with a wire wheel on my drill. Fast, loud, gritty. Then I worked a job in Dayton next to a guy named Walt who has been sweeping since 1981. He watched me for about 10 minutes and said nothing. Then he pulls out this old flat scraper, ground down thin, handle wrapped in tape. He did a 20 foot run in 25 minutes by hand. Zero dust in the air. Creosote came off in clean curls. I stood there holding my drill like an idiot. I bought a scraper the next day. Three jobs in, my shoulders hurt but my lungs feel better and the homeowner actually commented on how little mess there was. Anyone else make the switch from power tools to hand work later in their career?
