Finally stopped using a shop vac for ash cleanup after 8 years
I used to just suck ash out with my shop vac like everyone else, then last winter I had a fire start in the bag because I missed a hot ember. Switched to a proper ash vacuum from Home Depot, the 6 gallon one, and it's way safer and honestly faster. Anyone else make the switch after a close call?

Nah, I'm on the other side of this. @olivia_lopez98 probably wouldn't agree with me, but I've been using a regular shop vac for ash for like 12 years now and never had an issue. Just let the ash sit for a day or two before you vacuum it up, that's all it takes.

Same thing happened to me, only I caught it before it got too far and just had a bad smell and a melted filter. Eight years without incident though, that is a good run you had.

My old toaster did the same thing, just started smoking one morning and the heating element looked like a melted marshmallow. My roommate at the time insisted it smelled like burnt popcorn for a week after we tossed it. Must have been some kind of grease buildup that finally caught fire.
