Fought a blocked flue for 6 hours, it was a toy car

Got a call from a lady in Springfield whose fireplace was smoking back into her living room. I ran my rods up and hit a hard block about 8 feet up, so I figured it was a bird nest or creosote chunk. Spent 6 hours trying everything, spinning tips, drop weights, even a camera, and the blockage never budged. Finally pulled the chimney cap off and a toy car had wedged itself sideways in the flue opening. Must have been her kid tossing it off the roof last summer. Anyone else ever find something that dumb blocking a flue, or am I just lucky?

Six hours for a toy car, that’s the universe testing your patience. Bet the kid got a good laugh watching dad’s tools go up that flue. Next time, just ask the neighbors if they’re missing any hot wheels before you start the job.
