Found out from a 1932 NFPA report that most chimney fires start in the flue, not the firebox
Spent 11 years telling folks the firebox was the danger zone, then a retired inspector in Dayton handed me the actual report and I felt like a idiot. Anybody got a firebox vs flue breakdown they actually trust?
Man, that report was buried for a reason, nobody wanted to admit the flue was the real problem. Here's the thing nobody talks about though: the flue fails because of what the firebox sends up it. Creosote builds from cold smoky burns, so a bad firebox habit shows up as a flue fire later. Fix the burn, save the flue.
