Fresh creosote build up after a clean flue job in Salem
Did a full sweep on a 20 year old insert last Saturday, customer said they burn only seasoned oak. Pulled the liner cap and found a solid 1/4 inch of shiny, tar-like creosote just past the damper, not the fluffy stuff you expect. Turns out they were closing the damper halfway to 'save heat' on cold nights, which let moisture sit and bake on. Has anyone else seen that partial damper trick cause this kind of hard glaze, or is it just me?

That half-closed damper move is a killer, seen it plenty on older inserts where folks think they're saving wood. Sucks you had to deal with that glaze after thinking it was a normal sweep.
