Hot take: I start each sweep with a plastic seal over the fireplace
I always thought putting plastic over the fireplace opening was a hassle. It felt like slowing down for no good reason. Then I worked on a house with white carpet in the living room. I gave the plastic seal a try that day. A big cloud of soot came out, but it all stuck to the plastic. The homeowner was happy with how clean everything stayed. Now I always do it before I begin.

That old chimney sweep article mentioned this exact plastic trick.

Learned that the hard way with my old car's coolant hose.

Notice how the smallest preventative steps often save the biggest messes later.

Why do people skip the small stuff then act shocked when everything blows up? Its like seeing a tiny leak and just walking past it for weeks. Then you come home to a flooded kitchen. Spending two minutes now saves you two days of cleanup later. The hard part is making those tiny fixes a habit instead of an afterthought. Feels annoying in the moment but the relief later is huge.
