Just found out that 90% of chimney fires start in the flue, not the firebox
I was reading through the NFPA reports last night after a long day of sweeping. Always thought most fires started from creosote buildup right above the firebox. Turns out it's way higher up in the flue where people don't look. Makes me want to double check my camera inspections on every job now. Anyone else change how they inspect after learning something like this?

Been doing this for 12 years and NFPA stats always surprise me. Did your camera catch any specific trouble spots up high like bird nests or offset joints where creosote builds up different?

90% of those NFPA stats come from reported fires too, and a lot of guys don't report a small flue fire if they catch it early. @nelson.wren I'd argue most real danger is still right above the firebox where the fast temperature changes happen, not up in the cold flue where creosote just sits there.
